As trees grow there are vast ranges of pressures and tensions, the grain around branches reveals this very clearly. The underside is pressed, and the upper side is stretched. Here the ripple of growing under pressure is clear. In woodworking terms this is called ‘fiddle-back’. As if that wasn’t enough, it was attacked by woodworm (puriri moth) as well. Yet in all this the tree thrived. We know people like this; pressure and tension cause beauty, just like some worms create butterflies.
